Faculties of private universities place 9 demands including independent management authority
The Bangladesh Society for Private University Academics (BSPUA), an organization of the faculties of private university, has demanded that the imposed 15 percent income tax be withdrawn and this money be allocated for student welfare, scholarship and research. This proposal to remove the discrimination of the private universities of the country also demands the establishment of independent regulatory agencies for private universities and the immediate launch of PhD programs.
The organization made this demand to all the authorities including the education ministry of the current interim government, UGC, APUB, BOT and the university administration in a press conference at Maulana Akram Khan Hall of the National Press Club in the capital on Monday (August 19).
At the press conference, President of BSPUA and Professor of United International University Dr. Farid Ahmad Sobhani said that various types of discrimination are seen in the private universities of Bangladesh today. We would like to make a set of basic demands to the relevant responsible authorities including the Ministry of Education of the Interim Government to improve quality in higher education and eliminate discrimination in private universities.
Among other demands, they proposed the inclusion of private university teachers in various government bodies including the Bangladesh University Grants Commission, Bangladesh Apprenticeship Council, Bangladesh Public Service Commission and various committees and sub-committees related to education.
They also demanded to ban politics in all educational institutions, including private universities both for students and teachers; discrimination against private university graduates in employment and priority of private university teachers in the highest administrative positions of private universities has been sought.
At the same time, meritorious graduates of private universities have been demanded to get direct PhD opportunities in public universities and to introduce standard service rules in every private university.
About the demand, the BSPUA president said, we strongly believe that all authorities including the current interim government, Ministry of Education, UGC, APUB, BOT and university administration will consider our vital demands with special importance and come forward to eliminate the discrimination of private universities. Because, the implementation of these demands for quality education in the current private universities is a timely demand.
BSPUA general secretary Dr. Nahin Mamun gave a welcome speech at the press conference while the program was conducted by the joint general secretary Dr. Abdullah al-Mamun.
BSPUA Vice President (Academic) Professor Dr. Akhtar Hossain, Vice President (Research and Innovation) Professor Dr. Mamun Habib, Finance Secretary Professor Dr. Julafiqur Hasan, Media and PR Editor Riaz Hafiz, EC member Prof. Dr. Nehrin Majed Executive Council members of BSPUA and faculty and students of various universities were present at the press conference.
It may be noted that BSPUA is a registered professional and non-political organization. The organization was established on June 24, 2021 with the aim of supporting the professional standards of private university teachers, ensuring the quality of higher education and implementing the sustainable education development plan of the government.
